The Selkirk and Oswego Yacht Clubs competed this past Saturday for the Selkirk Lighthouse Trophy. The race alternates year to year from Port Ontario to Oswego or vice versa. The race is started with the slower handicapped boats starting first and faster boats having to catch the other boats. It usually results in very close finishes at both lighthouses. Eighteen sailboats started in the Oswego Harbor and headed east to a finish line off of Port Ontario. The wind was from the Southwest and shifted towardthe west as the day proceeded. The first boat started at 10am and the last at 10:38 am. The multicolored spinnakers created a beautiful scene as the fleet started to bunch up at Nine Mile Point with the faster boats finally catching some of the slower boats. The wind intensified around Nine Mile and into Mexico Bay but lighten and became flukey near the finish line at Port Ontario. As expected the race was close at the end with the top five places changing hands within the last two miles of the eighteen mile race.
Final results were as follows: The first three boats overall were from the Oswego Yacht Club. First overall and first in Division 2 was Sail A 'Vie sailed by Fran Enwright. Sail A 'Vie has now one the race three times and captured his first Selkirk trophy. Second overall and second in Division 2 was Joe Mc Closkey sailing Petunia, third Overall and first in Division 1 was Hiawatha sailed by Bob Porter. The first Selkirk boat was Puffin Plus sailed by Don Clark who edged out Crusader sailed by Dan Mather by mere seconds. Puffin Plus was fourth overall and third in Division 2, while Crusader was fifth and second in Division 1. Placing third in Division 1 was Dream On sailed by Dave Rahm.
All of the sailors returned to the Selkirk Yacht Club for a fine meal and to talk about their individual experiences and the fickle Lake Ontario winds. |
