"Moongator," skippered by Peter Quackenbush of the Sodus Bay Yacht Club, chomped its way through the competition to win the Oswego County Hospice Cup Regatta on Saturday.
Quackenbush sailed a J/33 to win the event and earn a spot in the 2010 National Hospice Alliance Regatta, to be held at the Rochester Yacht Club.
Saturday's three-race regatta, and the accompanying Hospice 5K Walk/Run for Hope, served to raise money and awareness for the Friends of Oswego County Hospice. Last year's events raised more than $22,000 to help Oswego County Hospice patients and their families.
Since the first Hospice Cup Regatta in 2000, more than $141,000 has been raised, all of which stays in Oswego County. Constellation Energy was the title sponsor, and the events were hosted by the Oswego Yacht Club.
Quackenbush sailed "Moongator" to finishes of fourth, fifth, and first in the three races on Lake Ontario. That gave "Moongator" an overall score of 10 points (adding the place finishes) and the regatta championship.
Finishing second with a score of 14 on finishes of seventh, fourth, and third was "Peewee," sailed by Kiki Werner of the Rochester Yacht Club. siling a J/24. Fran Enwright of the Oswego Yacht Club placed third overall with a score of 17. He guided "Sail A Vie," a Beneatu 33, to finishes of second, first, and 14th.
There were 27 boats in competition. Sailors not only vied for overall honors, but also competed against boats of similar speeds for division bragging rights.
"Moongator" won Division 1 over "Dream On," sailed by Dave and Ann Raham, third was "Natural" from Sodus Bay Yacht Club. "Sail A Vie," won Division 2, taking first place in the division in each of the three races. "Splash," sailed by Ron Smith was sesond and Joe McCloskey sailing "Petunia" was third, all three are from the Oswego Yacht Club.
Werner skippered "Peewee" to Division 3 honors over "Seaweed," sailed by Charles Krylo, and "Rake Hell," sailed by Sarah Enwright. In Division 4, the top finisher was "Fifi," sailed by Herb Clark. "Nanee," skippered by Bill Vanee, was second.
